Dr Chandra Shekhar Nautiyal, Director of the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), Lucknow, has proved in a research that Ganga water has the ability to kill disease-causing E-coli bacteria. Dr Nautiyal has to say in this regard that this power in the Ganges water comes from Gangotri and Himalayas.
When the Ganges comes from the Himalayas, it mixes many types of soil, many types of minerals, many types of herbs. All in all, a mixture is formed – which we have not yet understood. Dr Nautiyal had taken three types of Ganga water for the test. They put E-coli bacteria in all three types of Ganga water. Nautiyal found that the bacteria survived for three days in fresh Ganga water, a week in eight-day-old water and 15 days in sixteen-year-old water. That is, E-coli bacteria could not survive in all three types of Ganga water.
Scientists say that there are bacteriophage viruses that eat bacteria in the water of the Ganges. These viruses become active as the number of bacteria increases and after killing the bacteria, they hide again. But the most important question is to identify where does this amazing ability to kill microbes in the water of the Ganges come from?
On the other hand, Devendra Swarup Bhargava, a retired professor of environmental science at IIT Roorkee, who has been doing research on the Ganga for a long time, says that this element that keeps the Ganga clean is present everywhere at the foot of the Ganges. Dr Bhargava says that the water of the Ganges has a wonderful ability to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere. Bhargava says that the capacity of digesting rotting filth in the Ganges is 15-20 times more than other rivers.
